Forest Bathing - Shinrin Yoku

Forest Bathing in Redmond

We invite you to experience Redmond's Certified Forest Bathing Trails

What is Forest Bathing?

Forest Bathing is a therapeutic, research-based practice that has demonstrated a variety of physical, mental, and emotional benefits. These include stress reduction, better sleep, enhanced immunity, increased feelings of energy, joy, and connection. Forest Bathing, also known as Forest Therapy, is inspired by the Japanese practice of “Shinrin Yoku,” which translates to “Forest Bathing.”

Forest Therapy is a deep sensory immersion experience that invites participants to “bathe” in the essence of nature. You move slowly, stop and observe, sit quietly, and notice things. The pace is slow…very slow. The focus is on connection and relationship with the natural space around you.

How To Practice Forest Bathing

Forest bathing is the practice of slowing down and noticing nature through your senses. It does not involve swimming, and you do not need special equipment or experience. Follow the route on the map and pause at each numbered invitation. An invitation is an optional prompt, not a task you must complete correctly. There is no “right way” to engage with an invitation. Spend a few minutes or longer with each one, adapt or skip anything that does not feel comfortable, and move at your own pace. Most people spend 60-90 minutes on a self-guided experience, but even 20 minutes in nature has been proven to provide benefits.

Ten Quick Tips for Forest Bathing in Redmond:

  1. Forest bathing does not involve swimming or bathing in water.
  2. No special equipment or prior experience is required.
  3. An “invitation” is simply a prompt for noticing and interacting with nature. Invitations can be skipped or adapted.
  4. Allow the experience to unfold for you. There is no correct outcome.
  5. Remain aware of trail conditions and other trail users.
  6. Plants, mushrooms, water, and other natural materials should not be tasted.
  7. Stay on designated surfaces unless the invitation specifically directs you to an appropriate established area.
  8. The experience can be completed alone or with others, preferably with conversation kept minimal.
  9. Consider setting your phone to “do not disturb.”
  10. Go slow (really slowly) and take as much time as you need.
